Now that you have your Neem Oil, here are some helpful tips on how to best use it.
WHY USE NEEM OIL?
Native to the Indian subcontinent, neem, also known as Indian lilac, Azadirachta Indica which mean tree of life, Neem has been used in Ayurvedic medicine with traditional remedies dating back to at least 5000 years.
Neem Oil has many beneficial properties and has been used for centuries in India for skin & hair care and as a natural insect repellent. Neem oil contains Oleic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Linoleic Acid, Vitamin C, and Carotenoids; it has moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties to help soothe dry and irritated skin. Neem oil can help stimulate cell regeneration and support collagen & elastin for a more youthful looking complexion. Neem oil also contains a compound called azadirachtin, which repels insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and ants.
HOW TO USE NEEM OIL
First, I generally recommend diluting Neem oil with a carrier before topical application. Neem oil contains potent chemical components that provide the many of its beneficial properties. A little neem goes a long way and for general face and body application, a 1 part Neem to 10 parts carrier oil (the carrier oil selected is dependent upon intended use; for general skin care Jojoba is an excellent choice) is all you need. This also helps to mitigate the naturally pungent, sulpher like aroma of neem. If after dilution you still find the aroma too strong add a few drops of your favorite essential oil.
For acne – Start with a ¼ neem to ¾ of your favorite carrier oil. Depending on your skin type and sensitivities you can increase the amount of neem used. For stubborn acne use a q-tip to dab undiluted neem directly on your blemish – leave on for 20 minutes then wash with warm water. Repeat daily as needed.
In all circumstances, I recommend always starting with a low concentration and only increase as needed.
For those with sensitive skin doing a patch test on the inside of your elbow is recommended. Simply place a small amount of neem oil on the inside area of your elbow; cover with a band-aid and leave for 24 hours. If you experience any redness or irritation wash with warm soapy water.
