Hydrosols are often referred to as “flower, floral or plant waters or hydrolats.” This is because they are produced by distilling fresh flowers, leaves, fruits, and other plant materials.
When you distill a plant, either through steam or hydro distillation, you are left with two end-products: the essential oil and the condensate water. Essential oils are concentrated, hydrophilic liquids that contain volatile aromatic compounds; hydrosols are a combination of the water-soluble components of the plant material and microscopic droplets of the essential oil held in a matrix of water. This condensate water is what we call the plant hydrosol.
Not surprisingly, hydrosols and essential oils have similar therapeutic properties. However, hydrosols are much less concentrated. Their scents are softer and subtler when compared to those of their essential oil counterparts. Due to their high water content, they’re also very gentle and can be applied directly to the skin.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A HYDROSOL?
In our product “hydrosol” is the main listed ingredients. We have no added fragrance or perfume. No added colors or dyes. The only time you would see an ingredient other than hydrosol in our products, is if we choose to add essential oil or other plant based ingredient for its benefits.
HOW TO USE A HYDROSOL?
Hydrosols are super gentle on the skin and can be used in many application methods.
For moisture: Spritz face with hydrosol prior to applying a facial oil and again after application. The naturally emollient facial oil will help to lock in the moisture supporting lasting hydration.
To refresh and replenish your skin spritz your face 3 to 4 times a day or as desired.
Use to set your makeup: Spray some hydrosol on a cotton pad and use to remove your makeup.
As a toner: Hydrosols can also be used to balance your skin’s pH after cleansing.
Replacement for water: For added benefits use hydrosols in place of water when mixing powered skin care products such as facial masks.
